Fissure sealant

TC dental Protective SealantsProtective sealants for children’s teeth.

In addition to our preventative dentistry service, we offer our child patients a decay-preventative treatment called fissure sealants.

Fissure sealants can reduce cavities in children’s teeth, by protecting them from decay.

How do fissure sealants work?

Fissure sealants are a clear plastic coating that covers the chewing surfaces of the teeth to form a protective shield. This prevents food and bacteria from entering the tiny grooves in the teeth – in particular the molars or grinders. Sealing the chewing surfaces of these teeth can prevent the pain and discomfort of tooth decay in the future.

How & when are fissure sealants applied?

Our dentist normally cleans and then prepares the tooth by applying a “bonding” agent. Once the agent air-dries, the dentist applies the sealant to each treated tooth. The sealant sets and becomes hard by using a special “curing” light. The treatment only takes few minutes per tooth. Fissure sealant treatment is completely safe and painless.

Fissure sealant treatment is highly recommended when your child’s permanent molars have fully emerged (ages 6-7). Teenagers or adults who experience frequent tooth decay may also benefit from this treatment.
